The University of Pécs (PTE) is Hungary's oldest institution of higher education, with close to 25,000 students, 10 faculties, and a broad international network. Its academic profile is exceptionally wide-ranging, spanning medicine, law, economics, natural sciences, and the arts. Its 21 doctoral schools and the János Szentágothai Research Centre both reflect its standing as a research university – one that sets the benchmark not only nationally, but by international comparison as well.
The Faculty of Business and Economics is one of the university's ten faculties, and at the same time a student-focused, supportive academic community committed to helping students develop professionally. The faculty's mission is to equip students with up-to-date knowledge and skills that form the foundation of success in today's labour market. The faculty plays an active role in the region's economic and social development, builds extensive corporate partnerships, and consistently supports project-based, practice-oriented education.
The Challenge
The diversity of study programmes and the size of the university create a complex IT environment: the educational, administrative, and communication systems – the student information system, e-learning, access and identification solutions, and various internal communication channels – each operate on different logic. For students, this means that in everyday life:
-
relevant information is scattered across different platforms,
-
every system requires a separate login,
-
during peak periods – course registration, exam periods, enrolment – the systems come under significant load.
The problem is compounded by the fact that these systems are often difficult to use on mobile devices. At the same time, the university's internal research showed that when students cannot access the information they need quickly enough, it creates uncertainty that ultimately increases their risk of dropping out.
This is a loss not only for students but also damages the university's reputation. That is why the faculty's leadership set improving the flow of information as a goal.
The task was not only a technical challenge, but also a shift in approach:
how can a complex institutional IT environment be unified in a way that truly serves the interests of the student community, supports academic progress, and enriches and deepens the university experience – all while preserving a community-oriented mindset.
From a development perspective, the biggest challenge was integrating different systems, as it was necessary to take into account:
- the heterogeneity of the existing architectures,
- the differing data models and the consolidation of data,
- security and data protection requirements,
- and handling periods of extreme, intermittent load on the integrated systems.
The Solution
The PTE Campus app is not simply a "mobile view," but a genuine, mobile-first digital service – an ergonomic, user-friendly mobile platform that:
- provides students with a single point of entry,
- presents academic information clearly and transparently,
- uses push notifications to ensure no one misses a deadline or update,
- delivers an optimised mobile experience on both iOS and Android.
Currently, the app covers the following functional areas, among others:
Overview of academic data
Timetable and exam information
News and events
Beyond their own results, students can also view group results. This comparative data provides more nuanced feedback on student performance, helping to reduce the risk of dropout.
The Result
With the introduction of the PTE Campus app:
- students can access the most important information through a single, central interface,
- the system runs stably even during periods of peak load,
- a scalable digital foundation platform has been created that can be further developed in the long term.
With the PTE Campus app, the university's two most important goals – increasing student satisfaction and building a university community – have become measurable.
The app is available in both English and Hungarian, supporting local and international student communities alike.

Client Testimonial
When the idea of the Campus App was born, we had no idea how many challenges awaited us. But with the active support of Webstar’s software developers, thinking together and focusing on finding solutions, we ultimately managed to overcome them. We hope the application will greatly support students in their studies and progress, and through this collaboration we ourselves have learned a tremendous amount as well.
